National Physical Laboratory Academy

Npl

In July, Muhammad AS and Bradley M were very lucky to spend a week in a local world class science laboratory. The School has a long-term relationship with NPL – several BWS alumni joined their workforce, some as apprentices, and an ex-NPL staff member now teaches science here!

Muhammad worked in the world-pioneering Time and Frequency Group using lasers to enable incredibly precise timekeeping by tuning the cavity of a Caesium Fountain Clock. Bradley joined the Bio-Metrology Group, using cutting-edge methods to create super resolution images of mitosis in action. As well as spending time in the specialist areas, the full cohort of 60 students from many schools took part in team activities and delivered papers before an audience at the end of the week conference. Overall, it was a brilliant introduction into the world of work.

With about 1000 applicants for 60 places, getting in to NPL Academy is very hard, though with places in areas like project management, personnel and finance as well opportunities in STEM topics including data science, students in Years 10-13 should take a look at www.npl.co.uk/academy and consider applying for summer 2026.
