Early Career Teachers (ECTs) 1/2
At Bishop Wand Church of England School, we are committed to providing our Early Career Teachers (ECTs) with an exceptional start to their teaching careers. We recognise that the first two years of teaching are fundamental in developing confident, reflective and effective practitioners. Our aim is to create a supportive, inclusive and ambitious environment in which every teacher feels valued, challenged and empowered to reach their full potential.
Our commitment to professional development begins before an ECT enters the classroom. We provide a comprehensive and carefully structured induction programme, beginning with opportunities to familiarise themselves with our school community, expectations, systems and approaches to teaching and learning. This is followed by a programme of in-school Continuing Professional Development (CPD), designed to support ECTs in developing their classroom practice, building positive relationships and understanding the needs of the pupils they teach.
Throughout their two-year induction, ECTs benefit from dedicated mentoring, regular professional dialogue, opportunities to observe experienced colleagues and personalised support that responds to their individual strengths and areas for development. Our approach places a strong emphasis on evidence-informed teaching, reflective practice and the practical application of professional learning within the classroom.
We are proud to work in partnership with Xavier Teaching School Hub, which delivers our external Early Career Teacher development programme. This partnership combines Xavier's expertise in evidence-informed professional development with the personalised mentoring, practical training and collaborative culture embedded within Bishop Wand. Together, we provide a coherent and supportive programme that enables our ECTs to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required for a successful and rewarding career in education.
Our approach is underpinned by our school values of Inspiring Minds, Respecting Difference and Nurturing Spirit, recognising the God-given potential of every individual. These values shape not only the education we provide for our pupils but also the way we invest in and develop our staff.
At Bishop Wand, we believe that developing great teachers is central to providing an excellent education for every pupil. By investing in our Early Career Teachers, we are investing in the future of our school community and supporting the next generation of exceptional educators.
