Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a self-improvement programme designed to allow young people the opportunity to develop essential life skills, discover new interests and talents and to also offer them a fun experience with their friends. Any young person can take part, regardless of ability, gender, background, or location. Achieving an award is not about competition or being first, it's about setting challenges and pushing personal boundaries.

There are three levels to the award, Bronze, Silver and Gold. All three levels require students to complete expeditions in the countryside, carry out volunteer work in their local community, develop or perfect a skill and to take part in regular physical activity.

Here at Bishop Wand, we are exceptionally proud to run one of the biggest Duke of Edinburgh programmes in South East England. Each year we have over 100 students from Year 9 complete the Bronze Award and over 70 Year 10 students complete the Silver. In 2018 we were delighted to introduce our first ever Gold Award for our Sixth Form students. We were very proud to have nearly 20 of our students receive their Gold Award from HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex at Buckingham, and St James’ Palaces.

The award is launched to our Year 9s in December each year. The Year 10s begin their Silver Award following the completion of the Bronze Award in March of Year 10. Students can begin the Gold Award upon joining the Sixth form.

If you are interested in taking part, you can find all information on the Duke of Edinburgh Award website, dofe.org

Please do speak to either Mr Worrell or Mr Leonard in School if you have any questions specifically linked to the award at Bishop Wand.
