Beyond the Classroom

At The Bishop Wand School we believe that learning does not just take place in the classroom and that , regardless of ability, students should have the opportunity to develop their social and practical skills through an extensive range of extra-curricular activities.  The School offers a varied programme of extra-curricular activities ranging from lunch time and after schools clubs;  UK based and overseas visits organised by subject departments designed to enhance students understanding of a specific subject; participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Programme or annual Ski Trip.

The Enrichment Periods

In addition to the taught courses selected students also have one lesson each week to develop wider interests.  In this time students can complete the Extended Project Qualification or they can choose from a range of alternative options that develop wider skills that are attractive to universities and employers.

  • Volunteering at our local food bank or supporting the elderly,
  • KS3 team teaching
  • Accelerated Reader Programme with year 7 students
  • Art for fun
  • Rock school
  • Holiday Spanish
  • Fitness

Senior Students and House Leaders

The Senior Student team, ably led by the Head Boy and Head Girl, are superb!  They are integral to the running of the Student Council Action Groups which lead change in a range of areas around the school.  They also organise and run whole school events such as the Charity Days that take place 3 times a year and play a huge part by being ambassadors for our school at events such as Open Evening. Students are elected in by the student and staff body following two weeks of campaigning!  A new role for 2016 are the House Leaders.  Sixth Form students appointed are to be given the challenge of extending our school house system by leading a new range of inter-house competitions in a range of subject areas!  These roles help students develop essential leadership and organisational skills which help set them apart from others!

Further information about Student Voice can be found on our Student Council Page.

Trips and visits

A range of residential and day trips are arranged to enhance learning; information regarding these is with the subject information.  Alongside these are a range of trips are available to all students including:
•    Ski Trip
•    Lessons from Auschwitz
•    War cemeteries Trip

In addition, on alternate years we offer an extended expedition to a more far flung destination.  In August of 2017 Mr Leonard will accompany a group of students to Borneo for 3 weeks where they will engage in community, environmental and wildlife projects.
